What affects my connection speed?
Your DSL connection speed is subject to several factors, most of which are beyond the control of either you or NetZero. These include (but are not limited to):
- The distance from your home to the closest DSL switching station.
- The condition of the wiring in your house.
- The number of users currently on your home network.
- The internal configuration of your computer.
- The server speed and congestion of the Web site you are attempting to access.
Do I need a home phone line to use NetZero DSL Internet service?
Yes. In order to use our DSL service you must have an active home phone line or land line. To check if your phone line is active, plug a regular telephone to your wall jack and listen for a dial tone.
Will NetZero DSL affect my phone service?
No, your NetZero DSL service should not affect your phone service at all. Even though your DSL modem uses your phone line, it makes use of a different signal or channel than the one used by your phone for voice communication. Just plug in the special DSL filters (provided in the Broadband Installation Kit) between your phone and the jack to make sure your regular phone calls don't cause interference with your DSL signal.
What happens if I move?
If you move, the first thing you will need to do is ensure that NetZero DSL is available at your new address. Simply provide your new home phone number (including area code) in our
service availability form, then click the Check Availability button.
Since NetZero DSL service is activated for a specified phone number at a fixed location, you must first cancel your existing DSL service before you can transfer your service to a new location/phone number. This will result in a temporary interruption of service while your new phone number is activated for DSL.
If you have any other questions regarding the transfer of your NetZero DSL service, call our customer service line at 1-800-638-9376.
I already use NetZero Dial-Up. If I upgrade to NetZero DSL can I keep my email address?
Yes. Upgrading from a NetZero dial-up account to either NetZero DSL service will not affect your current NetZero email account. Both your member ID and password will remain the same, and you will use the same information to log-in to the Message Center, your My Account page, and all other areas of NetZero.
Do I need a second phone line?
No. NetZero DSL uses a different signal or channel than your phone for voice communication, so you can surf the Internet while talking on the phone - all on one line.
Will NetZero DSL tie up my phone line?
No. DSL allows you to connect to the Internet and make phone calls at the same time. This means you can still talk on the phone, send a fax, or get messages on your answering machine while you surf the Internet at the same time.
Can I change my phone number to get one that qualifies for DSL?
Unfortunately, no. Your DSL service is not based on your phone number, but on your distance from the switching station. Simply changing your phone number will not have any affect.
Will my current phone features work with DSL?
Yes. Even though NetZero DSL service uses your existing phone line, it uses a different signal or channel than your phone. This means you can still talk on the phone, send a fax, use call waiting, get caller ID, or get messages on your answering machine while you surf the Internet at the same time.
Will I ever get busy signals when connecting to the internet using NetZero DSL?
With NetZero DSL, getting busy signals while trying to connect are a thing of the past. That's because you don't have to dial-in to connect - NetZero DSL is an "always on" service. From the moment you start your computer, you are connected to the Internet.
Is my computer safe with NetZero DSL?
If you practice safe surfing while on the Internet (such as using a firewall and anti-spyware software), and don't enable file-sharing with Windows 98, your computer should be as safe as it is with dial-up.
However, it is good practice to always assume your computer information is at risk, and to use password protection and caution when surfing Web sites. As part of your NetZero DSL package, you will also receive Norton AntiVirus Online for free. Norton Internet Security Online is also available for an additional cost. These programs offer additional protection for your computer against Spam, phishing, viruses, hacking, worms, and other dangers.
